As we observe Myopia Awareness Week, it's crucial to highlight the innovative approaches and treatments that can transform the lives of those struggling with this condition. Below, our eye care team highlights a pair of patient success stories that show the importance of getting to the root cause of vision issues and prescribing the right treatments.
Myopia and Double Vision Solved
When AP came into our office, he had myopia and complained of double vision a few times a day due to a misalignment of the eyes. His symptoms persisted despite being prescribed CRT by a different eye doctor to address his myopia, and wearing Neurolens to address his double vision when watching TV, working on computers, or reading during the day. In order to watch TV or interact on his tablet, AP was forced to turn his head to one side, squint his eyes, and move very close to the screen. He also reported that vision correction from CRT tended to fade by the end of the day. Fortunately, a friend of his whom we had treated in the past was happy to refer him to us.
After conducting a thorough eye examination, we determined that his eye misalignment was the source of the issue. We prescribed custom orthokeratology lenses, which successfully addressed the myopia, and within a short while, he could see clearly all day. We also prescribed him a Vision Therapy regimen, which he was very careful to follow, enabling him to address and correct the issues causing his double vision.
He now sees clearly and comfortably and is quite happy with the work we were able to do to improve his vision and his life.
How Ortho-k Helped Our Patient Overcome Myopia and Astigmatism
Another success story is KVR, a 15-year-old girl referred to our office for orthokeratology because she was nearsighted and beyond the general parameters for standard orthokeratology. The reason that she became this nearsighted and astigmatic is because of an underlying issue with eye teaming.
We prescribed both lenses for orthokeratology and a custom vision therapy regimen. The orthokeratology lenses addressed the structural component, correcting abnormalities in the eye that were causing her myopia, so she was able to see with and attain 20/20 in each eye. Vision Therapy addressed the functional component, addressing the issues tied to her eye teaming.
In both of these cases, previous treatments had failed because they only addressed the symptoms rather than getting to the root of the problems. When we evaluated their vision, identified the root issues, and corrected them, our patients were able to live more comfortable lives with clearer vision and healthier eyes.
